Given the proximity of Madame Web’s theatrical run to Sydney Sweeney‘s passion project Immaculate, many questioned Sweeney’s initial decision to appear in Madame Web. She stated to The Hollywood Reporter that the film “was a building block” for her and provided her with important contacts in the business.

“To me, that film was a building block. It’s what allowed me to build a relationship with Sony. Without doing ‘Madame Web’ I wouldn’t have a relationship with the decision-makers over there … Everything in my career I do is not just for that story, but for strategic business decisions. Because I did that, I was able to sell ‘Anyone But You.’ I was able to get ‘Barbarella.'”

Although Sweeney made a wise professional choice in starring in Madame Web, her contribution to the film was mostly incidental.

In an interview with Bustle, Dakota Johnson said that she began to realize throughout production that the picture was not exactly what she had signed up for.

“Sometimes in this industry, you sign on to something, and it’s one thing and then as you’re making it, it becomes a completely different thing, and you’re like, Wait, what?”

These performers are not to fault for this. However, a lack of emotion from the actors might draw attention to the script’s already thin quality and discourage viewers from feeling the same way.

Not only is it not comic-accurate, but it also spits in the comics’ faces

Madame Web appears to have made an effort to please admirers, but she could have just let comic book lovers down.

Before the film’s release, promotional materials suggested that Julia Cornwall, Anya Corazon, and Mattie Franklin would reprise their roles as comic book superheroes.
