One of the most popular new characters in Spider-Man: Homecoming is Hobie Brown, the anarchic Spider-Punk who wears the mask. Who exactly is he, though, in the Spider-Verse?
Spider-Punk, voiced by Daniel Kaluuya of Black Panther, was a crucial person in the sequel for Miles Morales‘ journey since he was “the antithesis of all these authority figures in Miles’ way.” One can see this was true in a significant manner after watching the movies.
In contrast to Miguel O’Hara, who has had decades of exposure in comics since the 1990s, Spider-Punk is a relatively new character, having been established in 2014. This makes his popularity boom from the animated sequel all the more astounding.
Hobie Brown: who is he?
One statement from Across the Spider-Verse sums up Hobie Brown: “I hate the AM, I hate the PM.” He is an anarchist who rocks out while spitting in the face of authorities.
Hobie Brown, also known as Spider-Punk, is the radioactive suicide machine known as Spider-Man on Earth-138. In the books, Hobie is an American rebel battling President Norman Osborn’s totalitarian rule, while in the movie, Hobie is a genuine Brit.
Since his design was initially meant for Spider-UK, this modification can be attributed to the comics. Additionally, Hobie without his mask appears to be a few years older or, at the very least, much more mature than his comic book counterpart.
Hobie does provide Miles (as well as the audience) with the customary summary of his backstory, which closely parallels the comics. Along with “staging armed permitted political action/performing art pieces,” he “[plays] shows” and “[antagonises] fascists.“
In addition, he claimed that although comic character Hobie had never been a runway model (in costume), he was “briefly” one. Nevertheless, his outlook and convictions set him apart from the other Spider-People.
What Specialties Does Spider-Punk Possess?
In the comic books, Spider-Punk possesses all of the same superhuman abilities as the original Spider-Man, including his own web-shooting abilities. The same seems to be true in Across the Spider-Verse, although his guitar is what distinguishes him from the other Spider-People.
In both the comics and the movie, Hobie breaks past the energy barrier at Pavitr’s Alchemax by using his guitar to produce piercing sound waves. Naturally, the biggest use of his guitar in the comics was to take down President Osborn and his army of riot police who had been infected with the Symbiote.
Hobie weakened the Symbiotes with soundwaves, and when Osborn saw his chance, he slammed his guitar into Osborn’s neck and severed his head from his body. Although it’s doubtful that Sony will let Hobie go that far in the threequel, fans may expect to see him employing his guitar more frequently in battles against Spot and Miguel’s Spider-Society.
Can we expect Hobie Brown in Beyond the Spider-Verse?
In order to save Miles, Gwen Stacy forms her own Spider-Band, which consists of Peter B. Parker and Mayday Parker, Spider-Man Noir, Peni Parker, Spider-Ham, Pavitr Prabhakar, Spider-Byte, and, of course, Hobie Brown. Therefore, it is already certain that he will show up in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.
What role will he play in the threequel’s narrative is the ultimate mystery. Miles is initially envious of Hobie in the movie and their hazy relationship with Gwen. But it soon becomes clear that he backs Miles and his disobedient behaviour towards the Spider-Society, even standing by him during his intervention.
Most crucially, though, Hobie showed Miles how to escape the cage by using his hands and a venom strike when Miguel imprisoned Miles. Ironically, Spider-Punk may end up being the only member of Gwen’s Spider-Band that Miles would actually trust despite his initial envy of Spider-Punk.
Will Hobie Brown Make an MCU Appearance?
Miles Morales will be a live-action character, according to Sony Pictures producer Amy Pascal. Anyone’s guess as to whether this refers to the same Miles from the Spider-Verse trilogy, a new character introduced in the MCU, or his own franchise in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. Could Spider-Punk possibly make an appearance in the MCU, though?
His only plausible appearances in a Marvel Studios production would be in Secret Wars or Kang Dynasty, both of which will undoubtedly have several Multiversal cameos. Nevertheless, Sony and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige collaborated to bring their perspectives on the Multiverse and the utilisation of MCU themes into line.
Therefore, there is a remote possibility that Spider-Punk will at least appear in the Multiversal event films in live action.
Across the Spider-Verse, starring Spider-Man, is currently on display in cinemas.
