Marvel Studios Teases the MCU Debut of Its Own Black Superman

Another Marvel Studios executive discussed their own idea for a Black Superman-like character in the MCU after it had already been hinted at.

Nate Moore, VP of Production & Development at Marvel Studios, appears to want to introduce Blue Marvel, a character who has previously been mentioned, to the studio’s super-powered series.

Teyonah Parris mentioned during WandaVision’s run that she wanted to introduce the hero to the MCU as a love interest for actress Monica Rambeau. Parris said she is aware of Monica’s “love interest with Blue Marvel” in a video interview, calling the idea of the two getting together on camera “quite hot.”

The mention of Blue Marvel recently suggests that the character’s MCU debut could be closer than one might anticipate.

Nate Moore, vice president of production and development at Marvel Studios, mentioned his interest in introducing Blue Marvel, a superhero similar to DC’s Superman, to the MCU on the Crew Call podcast hosted by Deadline.

When asked which Marvel character he would want to see join the series, Moore immediately mentioned Blue Marvel, calling him “a terrific guy” who is “almost Superman in strength and powers:

“And then there’s a fantastic character who’s relatively recent in Marvel, named the Blue Marvel, who is fascinating. So, he’s a character who is almost Superman in strength and powers, who in the ’60s, operated as a Blue Marvel masked character.”

The Marvel Studios executive bemoaned the character’s appeal as a Black superhero working in “the power keg of the Civil Rights era” in the comics:

“But, in a fight, his mask is ripped off and people realize he’s Black. And [John F.] Kennedy actually asks him to go back undercover because he’s scaring people, ’cause he’s gonna upset the powder keg of the Civil Rights era. And he’s since been reintroduced into… Marvel publishing as a really smart, almost Captain Nemo character. Like he takes great space voyages and he goes on these grand adventures. But he’s a great character. But there’s so many. I mean, there really are a lot. There’s a lot of exciting stuff that’s gonna come.”

This is happening at the same time as Warner Bros. (WB) and DC are working on their own Black Superman project, which J.J. Abrams has been tapped to produce. The movie’s production schedule is unknown, although it has been mentioned that WB is still pressing forward with the big comic book movie.

Who is the Blue Marvel of Marvel Comics?

At this moment, it seems more likely that a Blue Marvel project will appear on the MCU schedule when it does so than if it will. The hero’s alter ego, Adam Brashear, seems poised and prepared to make the transition to live action.

The likelihood of it happening is high if higher-ups at Marvel Studios, like Nate Moore, view the character as their first pick for a film or television adaptation. And since it would deal with topics that aren’t frequently covered in the comic book movie genre, it would be a fascinating project to take on.

Sure, fans wouldn’t get the Monica Rambeau love story Teyonah Parris so desperately wants from a Blue Marvel movie, but Marvel Studios could create a tale of a troubled hero who, despite being lauded by the general public, cannot reveal his identity or receive the recognition he deserves due to the colour of his skin.

There were a lot of faceless heroes in that 1960s era, and if Marvel Studios could find the appropriate individuals to tackle such a challenging narrative notion, this might be a fascinating historical metaphor for the MCU.

Additionally, the coincidence of this and DC’s Black Superman movie‘s release dates would be noteworthy. As Moore said above, Blue Marvel has Superman-like abilities.

Three of the two characters’ most shared abilities include superstrength, invulnerability, flying, and energy manipulation. Despite Blue Marvel’s unique abilities to absorb antimatter and build forcefields, it’s impossible to not to notice the parallels between the two heroes.

The level of direct competition that may exist between these two films has seldom been seen on the big screen. As a result, Warner Bros. and Marvel Studios may want to use this extraordinary situation as an opportunity to try out some new business and storytelling ideas.
