The Guardians movies’ covert protagonist is revealed by James Gunn (Not Star-Lord, please)

James Gunn claims that there are more heroes in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 besides Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord.

Peter Quill may have been the first member of the team that viewers met, but the Guardians of the Galaxy series has always been an ensemble.

Fans have witnessed the team’s development as individuals and a unit via two films, appearances in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, and most recently The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.

Gunn is most motivated to finish the narrative of the franchise’s secret hero as Phase 5’s Vol. 3 attempts to wrap up their individual arcs.

Gamora, Rocket, Adam Warlock, Drax

The Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn acknowledged to Empire that Star-Lord will continue to be affected by the death of Gamora in the next threequel:

“I would say Peter’s kind of a mess. I think he’s suffering from major detachment issues.”

The primary reason for Vol. 3 is Rocket Raccoon, as he always has been, even if Quill’s loss will be addressed.

The filmmaker asserts that Sean Gunn and Bradley Cooper‘s cranky, cantankerous Rocket was “always the secret protagonist” of the Guardians movies:

The filmmaker asserts that Sean Gunn and Bradley Cooper’s cranky, cantankerous Rocket was “always the secret protagonist” of the Guardians movies:

“For me, he was always the secret protagonist of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. You’ve never seen Rocket in any movie not do something altruistic. He’s never done anything other than for his friends. He’s not a hero in the typical sense of the word. Telling his story was really important to me.”

Rocket’s MCU journey has been emotional and unselfish, as mentioned by Gunn.

He may have an arrogant exterior and a fondness for sarcasm, but he always comes through for his pals. After Thanos’ snap, he even joined the Avengers.

His history, though, is the one that fans know the least about of all the Guardians.

The filmmaker asserts that his comeback to the MCU is due to the fact that he “needed to finish Rocket’s story:” because Gunn is now the new co-head of DC Studios and Vol. 3 appears to be the franchise’s final instalment:

“People ask me, why did you come back and finish the story? It’s because I needed to finish the story. And especially because I needed to finish Rocket’s story.”

There Is Nothing Else Like Rocket Besides Rocket

Rocket has been the true protagonist of the Guardians series, showing sympathy for Thor in Infinity War, grieving over the loss of Groot, and more.

The Guardians of the Galaxy are a group of misfits that made the decision to become heroes, as the 2014 movie established; Rocket’s tale falls within that description as well.

The issue is that Rocket doesn’t view himself in that manner and is still struggling to accept his background and who he is.

Fans have seen from Vol. 3’s promotion that the threequel specifically seeks to examine that.

Therefore, it doesn’t sound like Rocket will continue to be the Guardians’ “secret protagonist” after his hero’s journey is completely realised and finished when Vol. 3 is released in May.

On May 5, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 makes its theatrical debut.
