The Secret Invasion release date has not been announced. But it is now streaming on Disney+.
Secret Invasion release date
In September 2021, the release date for the Marvel Studios’ series “Secret Invasion” has not been officially announced. However, it is expected to premiere on Disney+.
Many MCU fans have been extremely disappointed with Secret Invasion thus far.
In the currently airing Disney+ series, Samuel L. Jackson plays Nick Fury, who battles a group of Skrulls, a race of shape-shifting aliens.
Fans have been eager to see if Marvel Studios could authentically bring the same degree of political intrigue and duplicity that was there on the page for Secret Invasion, which is based on the cherished Marvel Comics series of the same name.
A highly anticipated series on the MCU schedule, Secret Invasion swiftly rose to the top due to the notoriety of the comic book series and the promise of a suspenseful political thriller set in the world of superheroes.
But this is the reason that talent has, up to now, been wasted.
It Disguises as a Political Thriller in “Secret Invasion”
The analogy for contemporary worries about not being able to trust anyone, both inside and outside of government, is a foundational aspect of the Secret Invasion comic run.
It is a political thriller where everyone could be the adversary.
To put it frankly, though, Secret Invasion has the appearance of trying to make its best imitation of a political espionage thriller (like The Americans or Mission: Impossible) but failing to do so.
An executive’s whiteboard checklist of what constitutes a “cool” espionage-based thriller can feel like you’re watching the show while doing so.
Because of this, the series resembles a spy-thriller to-do list more so than an exciting, paranoid adventure.
Speak Like a Spy
Many people’s major issue with the Secret Invasion series has been the writing.
The Disney+ title appears to be making every effort to be hip on many levels, but nowhere is this more apparent than in its speech.
A lot of the writing seems like it was just written as a vehicle for the amazing character to say the cool thing at the end.
As an illustration, in Episode 4, Nick Fury and his just-introduced wife Varra had a talk. Nick begins reciting a poem that the viewer had been introduced to earlier in the episode after Varra commits the screenwriting error of telling rather than showing when it comes to her background.
This overt allegory for the predicament the two characters are in feels forced, lacking any kind of nuance, and was merely included to be quote-on-quote cool.
The dialogue in this MCU project is hardly unique, but without a compelling narrative or visually amazing set pieces like in some of those other films, audiences will be considerably less forgiving.
However, this literary problem might have been a sign of how the series was made.
A new writer being hired for the project in the middle of reshoots in July 2022 was one early sign that the script might be in trouble, but it is difficult to know what was there before and after the company opted to go back and refilm some of the series.
Lots and Lots of Twists
Secret Invasion offers plenty of end-of-season twists in the vein of Breaking Bad.
Every episode of Secret Invasion features an “I didn’t see that coming” moment that has become a standard of contemporary television.
All of the series’ first four episodes have concluded with one of these, with three of them including the death of a main character.
Maria Hill’s death in Episode 1 was way too early because it appeared as though she will play a larger role in the series but was really killed off with little to no explanation. Gi’ah’s appearance in Episode 3 also didn’t come as much of a surprise because Marvel Studios doesn’t typically cast actors of Emilia Clarke‘s caliber to appear in three consecutive episodes.
Even though the death of Talos in Episode 4 hurts a little, it felt like it was done with the appropriate ceremony or emotional impact.
When utilized judiciously, these types of twists are fantastic. However, it significantly lessens the effect when the audience seems to know that each and every episode would finish with one.
What is the “Crossover Event”?
And perhaps the biggest criticism of Secret Invasion that can be leveled stems from one single quote.
Actress Cobie Smulders referred to the Disney+ series as the first MCU “crossover event“ to air on the streaming service prior to it.
Given the scope of the source material, which had the potential to change the world, this significantly raised the bar for expectations.
Secret Invasion appeared to be destined to be that Avengers-level must-watch show that fans have been demanding rather than the more condensed origin tales of character-focused spin-offs.
However, after four episodes, no significant “crossover” has occurred. Sure, Don Cheadle’s Rhodey joined in the fun, but in the same cinematic universe where Avengers: Endgame took place, one character stepping aboard is not a “crossover event.”
The Secret Invasion comic plot has a wide range of Marvel’s top talent, including Iron Man, Spider-Man, Captain America, and more. However, it may be unrealistic to expect a character alliance such as that in Endgame. The Disney+ series doesn’t feature any of them.
A covert invasion might have been fantastic.
The fact that Secret Invasion could have been something extraordinary is the most disheartening aspect of it.
Greatness has aspects to this. Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelson, Kinsgley Ben-Adir, and Emilia Clarke are just a few of the outstanding actors who make up the cast.
The production value feels – at least from that perspective – much more cinematic than any of Marvel Studios’ streaming assets that have come before, and is the best it has ever looked in an MCU Disney+ series.
And whenever Marvel Studios got around to it, the comic run seemed ready for an exciting TV or film adaptation. This is not a method of containing the genie now that it is here.
Marvel has merely wasted one of its best comic stories for a program that will only be OK. even good. but not as good as so many people anticipated.
Disney+ is currently streaming Secret Invasion.
