After their work on Disney+, the actor made a joke about “(needing) some time away from Anthony (Mackie).” However, there is definitely reason to believe that they will work together again in the upcoming Captain America standalone film.

Prior to entering Thunderbolts, he will supposedly only appear in one or two sequences in the film, though it was also stated that a rewrite was filed close to the start of the new year. This means that while Bucky’s part is likely to appear in the film in some way, it is possible for it to grow or shrink in scope.
What Size of a Role Does Bucky Play in Captain America 4?
Alongside Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier as they travelled across the post-Avengers: Endgame reality, the Falcon and the Winter Soldier allowed Anthony Mackie to fully complete his transformation from the Falcon into Captain America in all but one episode. And even though that series came to a close with Bucky finally accepting his history and moving on from it, it looks like he won’t be too closely associated with his companion in the upcoming adventure.
Sam and Bucky don’t share the same history that Bucky and Steve Rogers did in Phase 1 because their collaboration only began in Captain America: Civil War. Therefore, it makes some sense that Stan won’t be as closely associated with Mackie’s hero in Captain America 4. He might only appear during a few significant scenes as Sam faces his most recent difficulties.
While Bucky won’t appear much in this upcoming film, Thunderbolts will change that by giving him his first main role since his Disney+ programme in 2021. And with that in the works, he will continue to play an important role in the MCU for at least the foreseeable future.
On May 3, 2024, Captain America: New World Order will make its theatrical debut.
