Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, has once more hinted at the MCU‘s potential for Namor and his people in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
The head of Marvel Studios has already made comments on Tenoch Huerta‘s role in the MCU. After the newly introduced character made his eagerly anticipated debut in Black Panther 2, Feige was explicitly asked by a fan if they may ever see him in a solo excursion, and he said, “we’ll see.”
Nate Moore, the producer of Wakanda Forever, has already hinted at what would happen to Huerta and the Talokanil, saying that their next adversary “be in some trouble.”
More hazy suggestions about what fans might anticipate in the future have just surfaced online.
The Mutant Future of Namor
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and Wakanda Forever producer Nate Moore spoke with Ta-Nehisi Coates on The Official Black Panther Podcast about bringing Namor to life on film and what his future could hold.
Coates directly questioned the two on where they saw Tenoch Huerta’s Namor headed in the MCU’s future as a bonefied mutant.
Although Feige expressly mentioned the “80 years of storytelling with Namor” that[ Marvel Studios ] may draw upon, he added that “[they’ll] keep [Namor’s future] to [themselves]:”
“You know, people who read the comics know there are 80 years of stories with Namor that we can tap into. So where and when, we’ll keep to ourselves for now, but we think that this is an incredibly iconic character that’s been introduced, probably to most people, most moviegoers, for the first time. And we very much expect them to want to see more.”
Was Namor’s mention of the mutants totally deliberate? Feige said affirmatively, “Yes,” it was intentional.
Namor being referred to as a mutant, according to Moore, “is accurateas well,” which Feige affirmed.
Regarding the cultural adjustments made to Namor and his people in Wakanda Forever, Feige explained to Coates why he believed the new narrative “was brilliant”:
“I thought it was brilliant and the reason to do it. You know, there are a number of underwater heroes nowadays who have done a very spectacular job of presenting underwater kingdoms. So, yes, the reason to do it was Namor is a classic OG Marvel character and somebody that Ryan used to talk about during the production of the first Black Panther.”
Moore stated that Ryan Coogler needed help understanding and developing the sequel’s plot, which was a major factor in modifying Namor’s backstory and shifting Atlantis to Talokan:
“Yeah, you know, Panther and Namor have a very complicated history in publishing that Ryan [Coogler] was a fan of, that I was a fan of, that Kevin’s a fan of. And the way that Ryan approaches filmmaking, I would argue, is always finding the organic reason for that to be true. And part of that was then, okay, figuring out the reason why, what was called Atlantis, what would be called Talokan would exist, and you start to back into a mythology that makes sense for the character in a way, that was sort of not ever really defined and therefore lacked a specificity of storytelling that Ryan kinda requires to understand how to write to.”
The alterations, according to Moore, “gave the character and the society an anchor point,”giving Coogler exactly what he needed to create Wakanda Forever: Moore continued:
“And so, by landing in this Meso-American society, and specifically the Yucatec/Mayan society of past and present, I think it gave the character and the society an anchor point that allowed Ryan to build A. a mythology, and B. a narrative that put it on a collision course with Wakanda, both because of the similarities of the two civilizations and the very stark differences in their experiences historically.”
*Exactly When Will Namor Next Appear?
There can be little question that Namor and his Talokanil people will return given how Wakanda Forever ended with Namor and Shuri signing an alliance treaty. The question is simply when, not if.
After all, there are still a lot of individuals who are Vibranium-hungry, like Val (Julia Louis-Dreyfus). Could she possibly be the next human to encounter the aquatic mutant?
Namor’s presence in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars at the very least appears certain.
What about a project that is specifically directed towards Talokan? Unfortunately, that might not be feasible. Marvel Studios may not be able to publish any standalone stories featuring Namor due to rights disputes with Universal, albeit the public may not be aware of all the specifics of those difficulties. One would have to pray that they would eventually pass away.
On Wednesday, February 1, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will be available on Disney+ for anyone who wish to rewatch Huerta’s Namor.

“I felt the idea was wonderful and justified. You know, there are a lot of underwater heroes nowadays that have presented underwater kingdoms in a really amazing way. So, sure, Ryan used to bring up Namor during the development of the first Black Panther, making him a great original Marvel character.
Moore stated that Ryan Coogler needed help understanding and developing the sequel’s plot, which was a major factor in modifying Namor’s backstory and shifting Atlantis to Talokan:
“Yeah, you know, Panther and Namor have a really difficult publication history that Ryan [Coogler], I, and Kevin all enjoyed. I would contend that Ryan approaches filmmaking by always seeking the natural explanation for why that is the case. And part of that involved determining why Talokan and what was once known as Atlantis would exist, as well as beginning to go back into a mythology that fits the character in some ways but was never really defined and thus lacked the kind of specificity of storytelling Ryan kind of needs to be able to write to.
