Speculation that Mila Kunis might be competing for the role of Sue Storm, a.k.a. Invisible Woman, has been generated by photos of the actress with Fantastic Four director Matt Shakman.

Some of the “big-get roles” of the year, according to Marvel Studios’ Fantastic Four, are those that many talent agencies are attempting to secure for their clients. Prior to the anticipated commencement of production in late 2023 or early 2024, casting for the MCU remake is reportedly in the “early stages.”

On social media, fan castings and rumours have been rife, with the majority of them focusing on Reed Richards, the male lead. However, Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, who will undoubtedly serve as the film’s female lead and a crucial member of the MCU moving forward, plays one of the other essential parts.

Jessica Alba and Kate Mara already portrayed Sue Storm in earlier films, but the position is once again up for grabs. Even while the actress swears she hasn’t heard anything, Emily Blunt has been one of the most frequently mentioned names, especially in light of her husband John Krasinski’s Reed Richards cameo.

Is Sue Storm from the Fantastic Four played by Mila Kunis?

Pictures of Friends with Benefits actress Mila Kunis and Fantastic Four director Matt Shakman having coffee together in Los Angeles were recently published by Daily Mail. Their meeting has sparked rumours that the actress would be in line to play Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, as the MCU movie is presently casting Marvel’s First Family.

Just a few days prior to their meeting in Hollywood, Shakman responded to the numerous Fantastic Four casting rumours floating online, reassuring fans that they are “early in [their] process” of identifying their leading four:

“All the casting stuff you see is just rumors. We are early in our process there. We have nothing to announce right now, and certainly, when we do we’ll let you know.”

During the press tour for The Spy Who Dumped Me in 2018, Kunis and co-star Kate McKinnon spoke with MTV about the prospect of making a superhero film. Because those roles typically require “a lot of working out,” the Family Guy actress didn’t seem too interested.

“No, that’s a lot of working out. Yeah, lots of those people are hungry, and you have to be because you have to be in shape and I don’t want to be hungry for 10 years.”

After McKinnon noted that Kunis had to do it for Black Swan, she emphasised that it was only necessary for “like six months,” but a long-term commitment to a superhero franchise necessitates doing that “nonstop“:

“For like six months right. These people are like, they’re just working out nonstop. They have to be in shape.”

While Kunis did appear to be on board if it were more of a “funny superhero Guardians of the Galaxy-esque movie,” it seems that the long-term commitments are what turn her off from those kinds of roles:

“What if I don’t want to be fit one day? Once you sign onto these superhero movies you’re signed on for the rest of your life. You have to do them a lot, and I’m not against them, I love them. Kate [McKinnon] you and I could be superhero ladies if it’s like a funny superhero ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’-esque movie.”

Many responses have been posted on Twitter, including one from @italkmusicfilm, who fervently feels “she could be a great Sue Storm” and “deserves” a role of this calibre:

“I actually think she could be a great sue storm and I would love to see mila get a great role like this. She deserves it.”

After meeting Shakman, @herbodys‘ reaction to the possibility of Kunis joining the MCU was “omg”:

“hold up mila kunis was in a meeting with matt shakman, the director of ‘fantastic four’… is she joining marvel omg”

The idea of Ryan Gosling playing Reed Richards opposite Kunis as Sue Storm is being “manifested” by @BurniesBurner.

“Ryan Gosling Reed and Mila Kunis Sue I’m manifesting it rn”

Uncertainty surrounds the character Ryan Gosling may play in the MCU’s Fantastic Four revival, despite recent reports to the contrary.

A different coupling was envisioned with Kunis playing the superhero couple alongside her real-life husband Ashton Kutcher:

“ashton kutcher and mila kunis mr and mrs fantastic let’s goooo.”

Though @StardustRadi0 doesn’t think much of Kunis’ performance in Invisible Woman, she thinks she could make Alicia Masters, a blind artist and Ben Grimm’s wife, work.

“I can’t really see her as Sue, but I think she could do good as Alicia if they introduce her in this film.”

They think she would be fantastic in any role she might be given, despite @NathanMiller88’s suggestion that it might not have anything to do with the movie because they could be “just having coffee and hanging out”:

“Or they’re just having coffee and hanging out… Though if she was cast, it’s for a reason and she’ll probably do a good job in whichever role she is given.”

Is Mila Kunis a Part of The Fantastic Four in the MCU?

According to all reports, Mila Kunis and Matt Shakman haven’t collaborated on any of their previous projects, but they did meet through other channels. Hollywood is, after all, a tiny town, and many of the greatest performers there have come into contact through mutual connections, award shows, auditions, and other means.

So, even though the creation of Fantastic Four is one of Shakman’s current primary responsibilities, that doesn’t necessarily mean Kunis is now in the casting process. This might just well be a casual get-together with friends as it could be a business meeting.

Even if Kunis were to join the Fantastic Four, there will definitely be other female roles available besides Sue Storm, possibly ones that don’t require the same level of dedication and rigorous training that, at least as of 2018, the actress seems very eager to avoid.

If Kunis wants to play Alicia Masters, Marvel Studios may do it in Fantastic Four. The evil Puppet Master’s stepdaughter, a blind artist, betrayed her father to aid the First Family of Marvel and grew close to The Thing while caring nothing for his unkempt appearance.

In the end, only time will tell who will play Invisible Woman and the other three superhero team members. However, Shakman and team will likely be meeting with a wide spectrum of talent for these important Marvel characters because casting is reportedly still in the “early” stages.

In cinemas on February 14, 2025, is Fantastic Four.
