Marvel Producer Discusses Multiverse Rules in the MCU

A significant Marvel Studios producer spoke open about the Multiverse Rules in the MCU.

The Quantum Realm, which has been called “the basement of the Multiverse,” is where the idea was most recently depicted in Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania.

Although the branching timelines in Avengers: Endgame officially introduced the idea, it wasn’t really addressed until Tom Hiddleston‘s Loki Disney+ series. The main antagonist of the entire Multiverse Saga, Kang the Conqueror, played by Jonathan Majors, was also first presented in the Disney+ series.

Yet keeping track of something like a Multiverse is difficult; how does Marvel Studios manage it?

The Marvel crew met in order to “going through the Multiverse and [its] rules,” as Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige previously disclosed in Summer 2021.

The Multiverse’s Rules

Multiverse Rules in the MCU

Producer of Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania Stephen Broussard discussed how Marvel Studios adheres to the Multiverse guidelines when speaking on the D23 Inside Disney podcast.

About the internal Multiverse meetings that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige had previously described, Broussard said that they  “are about trying to be logically consistent within the universe:”

“(laughs) Yeah, it’s interesting. I would say, meetings like that are about trying to be logically consistent within the universe, which I would say is separate from being scientifically consistent. I don’t think anyone should look to these films and think they’re gonna walk away with degrees in quantum physics or other scientific pursuits, but that’s okay. I would hope they would walk away with an interest in pursuing those fields and maybe studying them for real.”

It’s more crucial that the movies and television shows stay true to their Marvel universe than it is that they follow laws that “hold scientific water”:

“… We kind of look to be logically consistent across the films. Like are we sticking to our own rules? Whether these rules hold scientific water or not, do they feel like they hold water for the universe at large? And the moments where we might break or kinda bend those rules, the tie always goes to: is it emotionally satisfying? I do think you could maybe pick on some of the logic here or there, no particular examples come to mind.”

The producer equates the Multiverse’s success rate with that of a “magic trick” when it comes to making it realistic in how it’s used throughout multiple projects:

“But we always are emotion first and if it feels like it’s gonna resonate, if it feels like the story’s gonna connect, we know that the audience is gonna go with us. And all movies have what I call sleight of hand. They’re trying to get you to watch the magic trick, and so the job of the movie is to not pay attention to the rules, or not pay attention to how you’re getting there. And I think all movies are kinda judged as successful or not successful based on sleight of hand and how well they’ve hid the magic trick.”

In fact, in July 2021, Kevin Feige first discussed these Multiverse meetings on the same podcast:

“… The multiverse is coming up in a big way. There’s interconnectivity there that people have already started to see and suss out and I had a meeting this morning with the whole broad Marvel Studios team going through the multiverse and the rules of the multiverse and exactly how to really deliver on the excitement surrounding the multiverse.”

The Expanding Multiverse of the MCU

Because Marvel Studios has incorporated the idea of time travel into the Multiverse, it has become a quite complicated idea. Given that both Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars are now in the writing process, it wouldn’t be too shocking if the company held weekly meetings to discuss the idea.

When will there be another Multiversal experience for fans now that Quantumania is over?

There’s also Loki‘s Season 2, which is scheduled to premiere this summer. The following movie, Deadpool 3, appears to definitely touch on the matter.

Whispers suggest that the Multiverse, including Loki’s TVA and Owen Wilson’s Mobius, will play a significant role in the first MCU R-rated film.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which will be released on May 5, appears to have its own issues to contend with for the remainder of 2023.

Although Kamala Khan’s bangle is thought to be an important component of these upcoming stages, it is uncertain how the Marvels are involved with the Multiverse.

In theatres all throughout the world, Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania is currently showing.
