Director Peyton Reed of Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania dug into the second post-credits scene of the movie, which featured an MCU veteran before his subsequent appearance.
In the second post-credits sequence of Ant-Man 3, Tom Hiddleston‘s Loki and Jonathan Majors‘ Kang had a raucous reunion. This was their second encounter since the God of Mischief and He Who Remains first crossed paths in Loki Season 1.
In this moment, Majors’ sixth leading Variant of Kang, Victor Timely, revealed the extent of the Multiversal villain’s impending menace while Owen Wilson’s Mobius and Hiddleston’s antihero were in the audience.
Fans are eager to see what Loki Season 2 will bring to the Multiverse Saga after the warrior variant of Kang made an appearance in Ant-Man 3.
Peyton Reed on the Ant-Man 3 scene with Loki
Director Peyton Reed discussed Loki’s appearance in the Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania post-credits scene in an interview with Entertainment Tonight.
Reed lauded Jonathan Majors’ performance as Victor Timely in the MCU, praising his “Frederick Douglass hair” (a reference to a well-known fugitive slave and abolitionist from the late 1800s) and the way he personified everything from that period in time:
“So, you know, that’s obviously Victor Timely. I was whisked by the set when they were shooting that and I just loved his Frederick Douglass hair and his whole sort of period, the intonation of his voice and everything.”
He also talked on how thrilling it was to hint at the audience just how many Kang Variants will appear in the Multiverse Saga:
“It really was to sort of tease the audience with the idea of like, ‘In Phase 5, you’re going to meet a lot of different variants.'”
As the MCU shifts towards more Multiversal tales, and specifically with how Loki Season 2 was being planned, he also observed how much sense it made to employ Kang in this way:
“As the MCU has been steering towards these Multiversal stories… it made sense to sort of adapt [Kang] for that. And it worked with what was going to go on in Loki, so very early on as they were developing Loki and we were developing this movie, it just made sense.”
Reed also discussed the sequence with IndieWire, revealing that it comes straight from Loki Season 2 and once more praising Majors for his performance and the style he created for the role:
“It’s a scene from Season 2 of ‘Loki,’ and Victor Timely is yet another variant from the comics. I love Jonathan’s look and his sort of period voice and his Frederick Douglass hair. That scene, there was just another glimpse of sort of, ‘OK, there are all these variants and here’s maybe the next one you might meet.’ We liked that idea.”
Reed linked this Loki scene to one from 2015’s Ant-Man, which hinted to Scott Lang’s involvement in Captain America: Civil War, thinking back to his work on the first Ant-Man film:
“We did a similar thing in the first ‘Ant-Man,’ the first tag scene was introducing Hope getting to see the suit, and then she was going to suit up. And then it was a quick scene from ‘Captain America: Civil War’ implying of course, that Ant-Man was going to return. But it was fun because it just sort of set the tone for all the potentially insane versions of Jonathan that you’re going to meet along the way.”
When The Hollywood Reporter asked Quantumania writer Jeff Loveness if he had a hand in crafting the scene, he simply stated that there was a “overarching theme” that the Ant-Man crew adhered to:
“Not direct writing. We had discussions with them, and there’s an overarching theme. But no, that team had already been working on their stuff, and it’ll certainly come into play in future movies. But I wrote the mid-credit scene, and that’s a tease of the next Kang appearance. So I haven’t written for Owen Wilson yet. Perhaps one day. (Laughs)”
Loki Prepared for Post-Ant-Man 3 MCU Comeback
As Loki first interacted with Kang in Loki Season 1, it is not particularly surprising to see the God of Mischief in this Ant-Man 3 encounter. Also, it carries on Peyton Reed’s tradition of establishing significant plotlines for upcoming MCU films, as he did for Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War.
Although Jonathan Majors will play several other characters in the future season of Loki, Victor Timely appears to play a crucial part opposing Tom Hiddleston and Owen Wilson.
According to rumours, the Summer 2023 series will follow a variety of Kang Variants causing havoc across the Multiverse as Loki and Mobius struggle to understand what they’re up against. Ant-Man 3 will even more serve as a stepping stone for everything coming in the Multiverse Saga, especially with Loki Season 2 paving the way for next episodes like Deadpool 3 and Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.
In theatres currently is Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania. In the summer of 2023, Loki Season 2 will make its Disney+ debut.
