The majority of fans recall the day that Gunn was sacked by Walt Disney Studios and Marvel Studios on a quiet Friday in July 2018. The Guardians of the Galaxy‘s future was called into question by this unexpected action.

It goes without saying that Gunn didn’t have much fun either. It was his buddies, according to the director, who “saved [him]” and “pulled [him] onto the life raft.”

James Gunn, the director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, discussed his traumatic time between being sacked from Disney and Marvel Studios and being formally reinstated in March 2019 in an interview with OneMan that was translated from Greek.

Gunn called the time in his life “a very painful period,” but in spite of that, he was “grateful” for it:

“On one hand, it was a very painful period and there are moments when I recall it and say to myself, ‘God, why were you so stupid?’ On the other hand, I am grateful for that period, because I think it came at a moment of my life when I really needed it. I had forgotten the reason I make movies. What was important to me. I also didn’t know how much my people loved me. I used to be the person who worked hard, who could depend on his status and fame to receive love.”

Despite the terrible situation he was in, he gained “a great life lesson” because to the assistance he received from his close friends and family:

“Then suddenly I realized that I had the most wonderful people by my side. My partner, who is now my wife, my parents, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen, Pom. They all supported me. Sometimes you think that people love you because you have a certain power, but at that point, none of that was true. They loved me for who I was. They were there whatever happened. Whatever the end result would be. They didn’t support me because I make movies. It was a great life lesson for me and I truly am grateful.”

How James Gunn Is Succeeding in the World of Comic Books

In a prior interview, James Gunn disclosed that even Alan Horn, the former chairman of Walt Disney Studios, had issues with the decision the business had taken.

The executive has recently discussed this, stating that it became apparent that changing the decision was “the right thing to do.”

Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, was “in shock” when the decision was announced.

To the filmmaker’s relief, everything seemed to be going very well. The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker were both developed as a result of his temporary hiatus, and Gunn is currently a co-lead in DC Studios’ rebooted DCU.

The result is that everything is turning out better than the filmmaker could have ever anticipated, even though it may still bring back sad emotions for him.

In theatres all across the world, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is currently showing.
