Hugh Jackman, who played the character for more than 20 years, responded to the prospect of Taron Egerton being hired as Wolverine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This came after months of speculation about this.
Jackman is getting ready to don the claws once more as his recognisable X-Men persona in Deadpool 3 after a few years away from the role.
The quest for the MCU’s interpretation of the character, though, continues as the seasoned Hollywood actor gets ready to leave his Marvel role. Taron Egerton, who played Wolverine in the Marvel Studios film Rocketman, has undoubtedly been the most well-known of the more than a dozen suggestions made by fans for the part.
But what specifically would Hugh Jackman think about Egerton assuming the role?
The Next Wolverine, according to Hugh Jackman
Hugh Jackman recently “turned down” the notion of Taron Egerton playing Wolverine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
When discussing the highly sought-after Marvel job, Jackman quipped that his Eddie the Eagle co-star should “cool his heels a little bit” in an interview with Empire Magazine (as reported by Screen Rant):
“Taron is one of the most talented actors out there. And you can see his range is incredible. But he’s just got to cool his heels a little bit.”
Although no actor has been confirmed to play Wolverine in the Marvel Studios film, Egerton is a favourite among fans. In response to the reports that he may join the superhero franchise last year, the Kingsman actor said that they originated from a “generic meeting at Marvel around four years ago” and “got kind of spun and twisted into this thing:”
“I made the mistake of saying that I had had a general meeting at Marvel around four years ago, which is true. But it got kind of spun and twisted into this thing… So I’m now at a point where… ’Cause look, I’ve always said… I don’t know if I’m the right guy to play that part. I was with Hugh [Jackman] yesterday, briefly, who obviously played the role originally. We’re such different vibes. I don’t know if I would be the right person to follow him. But I’ve always said I would be open to it. But at the moment, there’s no truth, other than the fan-casting thing, which goes kind of crazy every time I mention it. But, you know, who knows.”
Who Will Play Wolverine in the MCU?
Despite Hugh Jackman having “turned down” the notion of Taron Egerton entering the MCU as his well-known mutant, the young actor is still likely to land the X-Men part in the end.
Additionally, Jackman is probably making light of this comment. He called Egerton “one of the most talented actors out there,” so it stands to reason that he would approve if Marvel Studios called the 33-year-old actor.
Jackman has experience working with the Rocketman actor and believes in his potential. He is only making fun of Egerton for not putting the horse before the cart in this instance.
It would be fascinating to see whether Jackman gets hired as a casting consultant for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There has already been an actor that has been so committed in the role that will also feature in the franchise, which is a rare situation that Marvel Studios has never really dealt with (Deadpool 3).
If Jackman is to be replaced as the clawed mutant, his opinion may have some weight. With Jackman on his side, Egerton could have a stronger chance if he were to get hired.
Deadpool 3 will be the next movie starring Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, and it will be released on November 8, 2024.
