Harrison Ford Discloses His True Motive for Joining Marvel

Harrison Ford explained his decision to play Thunderbolt Ross in the MCU.

Harrison Ford

It was first reported in September 2022 that the Star Wars icon would be joining yet another Disney-owned series and taking over for the late William Hurt as Thunderbolt Ross.

Ford’s importance to Marvel Studios doesn’t need an explanation, but it’s unclear why the endearingly dismissive 80-year-old legend wants to.

The actor responded as he prepared for a year of premieres and Captain America: New World Order filming.

What Motivated Harrison Ford to Join the MCU

Harrison Ford admitted, when asked by The Hollywood Reporter what inspired him to go on with Marvel and play Thunderbolt Ross, “I watch all these terrific actors having a good time [in Marvel movies]:

“I don’t know. I can’t explain myself to myself, I just work here. I thought, ‘Everybody else seems to be having a great time. I watch all these terrific actors having a good time [in Marvel movies].'”

The Indiana Jones actor continued by saying that he enjoys “doing something different,” like his current role in Apple TV+’s Shrinking:

“I like doing something different to what I’ve ever done and pleasing people with it. So I’ll try a piece of that.”

In a previous interview about his MCU role, Ford expressed a similar feeling, saying that his desire came from wanting “to do some of the things I haven’t done:

“Hey, look, I’ve done a lot of things. I now want to do some of the things I haven’t done.”

Although the actor hasn’t appeared in anything from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he has previously played the President of the United States, a position Thunderbolt Ross holds in Captain America 4.

It’s unclear exactly how Ross and Sam Wilson’s Cap meet paths in the 2024 movie, but with Thunderbolts on the horizon, it might only be the beginning of Ford’s MCU stint.

The Future of the Harrison Ford Franchise

The renowned actor Harrison Ford is by no means the first to enter the superhero genre under the red brand.

Along with Robert Redford, who also made an appearance in a Captain America movie, other actors including Russell Crowe, Ethan Hawke, Christian Bale, and Angelina Jolie have joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Regarding Ford’s desire to witness other performers “having a great time,” his 1923 co-star Helen Mirren offered a comparable justification for her decision to join DC’s Shazam! There are some things you do just for enjoyment, Fury of the Gods claims.

Audiences are getting ready to see Harrison Ford reprise an old role in Indiana Jones and the Dial Destiny while he prepares for his new, entertaining part in Captain America 4.

Expectations are high for the June 30 release, and Ford himself voiced confidence in the undertaking.

Ford isn’t just having a good time—thanks to Indy 5, Captain America 4, and whatever else Marvel Studios has in store for him—he is also solidifying the concept that franchises are, in fact, his destiny.

On May 2, 2024, Captain America: New World Order will hit theatres.

Who was the inspiration behind the MCU?

Self-described “fanboy” Feige dreamed of establishing a common world, much to what comic book writers Stan Lee and Jack Kirby had accomplished in the early 1960s.

How much was Harrison Ford compensated for creating Skywalker?

Harrison Ford’s salary for his role in Rise of Skywalker is unclear. He received $15 million in addition to backend points for The Force Awakens, yet he hardly appeared in Rise of Skywalker.

Which role was Harrison Ford most fond of?

Ford has portrayed Indiana Jones in four films since 1981, and it seems he prefers the role. The swan song for the character will now be Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, although previously it was believed to be Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
