How the first season of Moon Knight subtly set up Avengers 5

The Kang Easter egg from Disney+’s Moon Knight may hint at how the Season 2 narrative will relate to Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars.

Everything points to Kang the Conqueror. Every aspect of Marvel Studios’ most recent round of Multiverse narrative is pointing toward The Kang Dynasty and its time-traveling antagonist, much as every tale in the Infinity Saga finally built toward the appearance of Thanos and the climactic confrontation.

But amid the increasingly interconnected bits of this jigsaw, Oscar Isaac’s Moon Knight has included one oddly solitary episode. The Disney+ series did it in a way that avoided tying itself to the wider picture while introducing a brand-new player to the MCU with the promise of more to come.

There were no significant set-ups, cameos, or hints to upcoming activities. One Easter egg, however, may have set the stage for a Season 2 that has far stronger ties to The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars.

Explaining the Moon Knight’s Kang Easter Egg

Marc Spector engaged a group of Arthur Harrow’s supporters in combat in Moon Knight Episode 3 while perched atop a structure in Cairo, Egypt. One of the thugs was wearing a jacket with a pattern like the rear of a pharaoh’s headdress, notably that of the fictitious Egyptian king Rama-Tut, a variant of Kang the Conqueror.

The fact that the jacket has patches in the hues teal and purple, which are most frequently seen on Kang the Conqueror’s evil attire, only serves to further emphasise that this is a clear allusion to Rama-Tut.

As Steven Grant was “mentioning a litany of great pharaohs,” the series initially had a particular name-drop of Rama-Tut, according to Moon Knight head writer Jeremy Slater, who spoke to The Direct in May 2022. Executive at Marvel Studios Nick Pepin proposed the proposal, however it was never implemented:

“There was a line in the script, and I don’t know if it survived. I can’t remember. But there was a line where, I think Steven, is sort of rattling off some Egyptian history that he has locked away in his brain, and he did mention Rama-Tut. I don’t remember if that scene, if that line is still in the show or not. But it was that small, it was him mentioning a list of famous pharaohs or something like that.

Nathaniel Richards of Earth-6311 travelled to Ancient Egypt on Earth-616 with a time machine shaped like a Sphinx because he was extremely fascinated by the cosmos and time period there.

Funny enough, as Mobius and Sylvie are being pursued by Alioth in Loki Episode 5, “Journey Into Mystery,” a Sphinx may be seen. It goes without saying that The Void was rife with Marvel allusions, but it’s difficult to dismiss the building’s parallels to this specific Kang Variant as mere coincidence.

During his voyage to ancient Egypt, Nathaniel Richards lost his vision, very like to Wanda Maximoff from the MCU. However, he was still able to employ the cutting-edge weaponry and drones on board his spacecraft to overthrow the ancient dynasty and instal himself as pharaoh, going by the alias Rama-Tut.

However, Rama-Tut was finally forced to leave the time and place after a time-displaced Fantastic Four led a rebellion against him. Rama-Tut was also able to recover his vision using a radioactive herb. All of this took place a year before Kang was ever revealed, and it marks the antagonist’s debut.

Why Avengers 5 Needs To Be Set Up In Moon Knight Season 2

Kang actor Jonathan Majors has hinted that the villainous character had so many Variants,” but fans have only seen or heard of Loki’s He Who Remains and Ant-Man 3’s Warrior Kang. Despite the fact that a recent rumour said a third “Inventor” variant will appear in Loki Season 2.

Writer of Ant-Man 3 and Avengers 5 Jeff Loveness said that when creating the MCU’s Kang, he dove deeply into the character’s comic book past and “way into the Rama-Tut and Scarlet Centurion stuff,” Because of this, Loveness may try to incorporate the Egyptian Kang in the plans.

Not to add, Kang will be developed by Marvel Studios as a menace to the whole Multiverse and time itself. It would only serve to further his development as a villain of the past, present, and future to introduce a Kang Variant with control over one of the most notorious civilizations from the deepest reaches of history.

According to the most recent rumours regarding the unannounced Moon Knight Season 2, Marvel Studios intends for it to air on Disney+ before Avengers: Secret Wars in May 2026. Its release would fall somewhere in Phase 6, between the fall of 2024 and the summer of 2026.

Marvel Studios’ intention for Moon Knight to make a comeback before to Avengers: Secret Wars suggests that the Disney+ narrative will somehow build up the blockbuster. And perhaps that’s exactly what Moon Knight needs after a debut season with almost any connections to the larger MCU, to enable him to seamlessly join the Avengers.

However, before joining the Avengers, Moon Knight still needs to finish off a lot of other unfinished business. For one, their third alter Jake Lockley continues to carry out Khonshu’s orders while Marc Spector and Steven Grant now feel free from his influence.

Before he can seamlessly move onto other projects, that thread needs to be finished in Moon Knight’s standalone series. Therefore, the Fist of Khonshu’s first Avengers team-up could have to wait until Secret Wars unless Season 2 somehow gets a speedy fast-track to before The Kang Dynasty.

However, this strategy could result in Moon Knight playing a part in Secret Wars that resembles Ant-in Man’s Endgame. Marc Spector might be introduced to the Avengers in the sixth film, having missed The Kang Dynasty, and having knowledge of Kang owing to an encounter with Rama-Tut.

How Rama Tut by Kang Might Fit Into the MCU

Because Moon Knight is so centred on Egyptian mythology, it’s simple to understand how a previous Pharaoh may easily enter the picture. Since Rama-Tut has existed even before the time of Ancient Egypt, Khonshu, the Moon God for whom Marc Specter serves as the Avatar, could have some concerns with him.

The connection between Marc Spector and Steven Grant and Khonshu is now highly convoluted as the Moon God continues to utilise their bodies as a host without their awareness through their Jake Lockley alter. However, that dynamic will probably soon be fixed so Spector and Grant may resume their activity in Season 2.

The Khonshu of the past may ask the heroes of the future for assistance in overthrowing Rama-Tut, as he has in certain Marvel Comics tales. In order to get assistance, he even calls Moon Knight from the year 21st century, which may occur in Season 2 as a way to introduce the Pharaoh Kang.

According to one tale, a Kang variant travelled to ancient Egypt in pursuit of three relics that would combine to form a Khonshu staff and provide him control over all of time. When the staff was shattered and the parts were spread, this plot was foiled, and Khonshu requested assistance from the current Moon Knight.

There have already been reports that the new Infinity Stones in this story are ancient relics, like as Ms. Marvel’s Bangle and Shang-Ten Chi’s Rings. These could be pieces of a larger, more potent relic that many Kang Variants will be vying for in order to rule the Multiverse.

Other than how Khonshu rewound the sky thousands of years, there are presently no references to time travel in the MCU’s Egyptian mythology, although certain Egyptian God magic may make this possible. In Ms. Marvel, a brand-new method of time travel was presented that even went against Avengers: Endgame.

On May 2, 2025, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars will both be released in cinemas. A release date or formal announcement for Moon Knight Season 2 have not yet been made.
