In Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, it appears that Kathryn Newton, a recent hire at Marvel Studios, may have had a little impact on Bill Murray’s choice to join the MCU.
Murray will portray Lord Krylar, the “governor of Axia,“ in the forthcoming third instalment, marking his debut role in the franchise.
The legendary comedian is not the only MCU rookie in the movie, though. Emma Fuhrmann’s role as Cassie Lang will be taken over by Kathryn Newton, who will also be making her Marvel Studios debut.
Prior to their roles in Ant-Man 3, Newton and Murray really played golf together frequently; Murray even takes his love of the game seriously years after his role in the 1980 golf-themed comedy Caddyshack. And it’s possible that Murray’s interest in the franchise was sparked by this friendship on the fairwa
How did Bill Murray join the MCU?
Actress Kathryn Newton claims that she is responsible for securing Bill Murray’s participation in the third MCU instalment, Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania.
The Cassie Lang actress shared a story about Murray contacting her and stating “[he wanted] to join the Marvel Universe,” in reality asking her “if it was okay if [he were to join] Ant-Man:” on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.
“A couple months later my mom’s like, ‘Kathryn, I have Bill Murray for you.’ I’m like, what? Bill Murray? She’s like, ‘Yeah, um here.’ And he’s like, ‘Kathryn, I’ve been thinking, I think I want to join the Marvel Universe and I was just going to ask you if it was okay if I joined ‘Ant-Man’.”
“Yeah Bill, that’s cool with me,”,but “maybe there’s someone else to talk to,” said Newton in response.
She called to see whether Murray and she were “going to play golf together” while shooting, something the two never got to do, but she felt Murray already had an offer on the table:
“But I think he had like an offer and he was just calling to be like, ‘Are we going to play golf together?’ Michael Douglas golfs as well. We didn’t get to golf though because London was rainy and turns out Marvel movies are very intense and I didn’t want to golf.”
The Marvel-Newton Connection
It’s quite wonderful to see that Murray would get in touch with a young actress like Newton and sincerely inquire about her opinion of his joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Newton is 47 years younger than Murray, yet the young actress exudes the same regard for one of Hollywood’s greatest comedy giants.
As “a character from Janet Van Dyne’s past,” Murray’s Lord Krylar will undoubtedly interact with the rest of Team Ant-Man, including Newton’s Cassie Lang.
It will be intriguing to see whether any of that on-the-course chemistry with any prospective encounters between Newton and Murray’s characters shows up in the finished movie.
Fans have been pleading for Murray to join the Marvel Studios cast, especially after the actor hinted that he was “interested“ in the world of superheroes. And it now appears that Kathryn Newton is to blame for making it happen at all.
On February 17, Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania hits cinemas.
