After an extraordinary streak, Avatar 2 FINALLY loses the top spot at the box office.

After dominating the domestic box office for the previous seven weekends, Avatar 2: The Way of Water has finally lost the top spot.

The pandemic may have caused a drop in the movie office, but Hollywood has only improved over the past year. With bestsellers like Spider-Man: No Way Home, the superhero genre did, however, regain some of its previous splendour. Other blockbuster hits include Top Gun: Maverick and, more recently, Avatar 2.

Expectations were high for James Cameron to follow up the record-breaking splendour of 2009’s Avatar by creating another smash hit. After shattering records, setting personal box office records, and assisting actress Zoe Saldana in making performance history, the filmmaker undoubtedly delivered.

However, all good things must come to an end, and after The Way of Water spent seven chart-topping weeks at the box office nearly unchallenged, competition has finally arrived to unseat it.

Breaking its insane box office winning streak is Avatar 2.

After dominating the American movie office for seven weeks, Avatar: The Way of Water has fallen to second place behind the Dave Bautista–starring, M. Night Shyamalan–directed Knock at the Cabin. The mystery-success horror’s gives the renowned director his eighth number-one start.

Last week, Avatar 2 earned $16 million domestically, but the eighth and most recent weekend saw a decline to $10.2 million. This put 80 for Brady’s anticipated $13 million domestic gross and Knock at the Cabin’s $14.5 million domestic gross ahead of the blockbuster sequel.

The Way of Water has earned $635.8 million locally and $2.133 billion globally as of right now. With just $54 million left before Titanic is dethroned as the third-highest grossing film of all time, James Cameron’s Pandoran adventure is currently the fourth-highest domestic and global grossing film of all time.

The weekend of February 3–5 had the following domestic box office totals:

1.Knock at the Cabin – $14.5M (Week 1)

2.80 for Brady – $13M (Week 1)

3.Avatar: The Way of Water – $10.2M (Week 8)

4.Puss in Boots: The Last Wish – $7.9M (Week 7)

5.The Chosen Season 3 Finale – $6.6M (Week 1)

How much more of Avatar 2’s box office revenue is there?

Fans can anticipate The Way of Water to eventually get the same treatment as Avatar, which has had four re-releases add about $180 million to its box office haul since its first 2009 run ended. A special push on that front will definitely occur when Avatar 3 in December 2024 approaches.

The Way of Water may surpass Titanic’s $2.188 billion, which the original release may still be able to eke its way past in the coming weeks, even though they are almost certainly never going to be enough to bring the current $2.133 billion worldwide total even close to Avengers: Endgame’s $2.798B second-place spot.

The following list shows the current top films worldwide in terms of box office:

1.Avatar – $2.923B

2.Avengers: Endgame – $2.798B

3.Titanic – $2.188B

4.Avatar: The Way of Water  – $2.133B

5.Star Wars: The Force Awakens – $2.068B

The Way of Water won’t have much of a chance to go up on the all-time domestic box office list, and it will most likely never crack the top five. However, the Disney movie might beat off James Cameron’s Titanic and Jurassic World to take the number seven position.

The following list shows the current top ten domestic grossing films of all time:

1.Star Wars Ep. VII: The Force Awakens – $936,662,225

2.Avengers: Endgame – $858,373,000

3.Spider-Man: No Way Home – $814,115,070

4.Avatar – $785,221,649

5.Top Gun: Maverick – $718,732,821

6.Black Panther – $700,059,566

7.Avengers: Infinity War – $678,815,482

8.Titanic – $659,363,944

9.Jurassic World – $652,306,625

10.Avatar: The Way of Water – $628,020,442

Having said that, Avatar 2’s amazing run is certainly coming to an end as evidenced by its fall from the top spot. As the home and Disney+ releases draw near and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, the first major blockbuster competitor, opens in theatres, this drop will likely worsen.

However, The Way of Water will probably continue to succeed in the overseas box office, where it has generated about 70% of its overall box office to date. Although Avatar 2 was always anticipated to be a success, few believed it would live up to the first to the point where it would actually become a worldwide phenomenon.

Currently showing in theatres all over the world is Avatar: The Way of Water.
