Garfield’s portrayal of Marvel’s wall-crawler vanished from the public spotlight after appearing in his two Amazing Spider-Man films in 2012 and 2014, and it appeared that this would be the end of the actor’s run as Spider-Man.
He then astonished the world by making an appearance alongside Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire‘s Spider-Man in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Fans began to question whether the actor would ever again don the web shooters as a result.
Failure of Sony’s Amazing Spider-Man 3
A third and fourth mainstream feature starring Andrew Garfield was in the works at Sony Pictures before The Amazing Spider-Man 2’s release in 2014. According to Collider, the film’s director Marc Webb was slated to return and the release date was planned for 2016.
Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man slate at the time included spin-off films for Aunt May and the Sinister Six in addition to this third Amazing Spider-Man feature, which was ultimately delayed to 2018.
All of that, however, was ultimately abandoned as a result of the contentious Sony hack in 2014. According to Wall Street Journal reporting, correspondence between Sony Pictures producer Amy Pascal and different Marvel Studios executives was released, and fan anger led to Sony and Marvel sharing the Spider-Man license.
Previous discussions with Sony were intended to have Garfield’s Spidey appear as a member of the MCU’s Avengers, but they failed (according to Screen Rant).
Sony and Marvel ultimately arranged to split the on-screen rights to the web-slinging hero during this second round of negotiations, which resulted in the rebooted MCU-based Tom Holland Spider-Man trilogy.
The possibility that The Amazing Spider-Man 3 (in its original form) would ever be produced was dashed by Holland’s casting.

It seems exceedingly improbable to fans that Andrew Garfield would ever return as Peter Parker in any manner after The Amazing Spider-Man 3 (TASM 3) was canceled because the franchise had appeared to move on.
However, when Andrew Garfield made an appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home from Marvel Studios in late 2021, the rumor mill revved back up.
Fans were in a frenzy after the actor made a cameo appearance in Mutliversal, with many speculating that this was the first indication of Garfield’s full-fledged comeback to web-slinging.
Sony Pictures had created a brand-new Spider-Man universe, suitably called the Sony Spider-Man Universe (SSMU), since Garfield’s final web-headed appearance.
There is presently no known Spider-Man within the MCU for this complex web of Spider-Man films, which includes Venom, Venom 2, and Morbius. Due to this, some have speculated that the SSMU and Andrew Garfield’s Amazing Spider-Man universe might be the same, in which case the actor might appear in an Amazing Spider-Man 3 film set in the SSMU.
Garfield has not made this rife speculation any better. No Way Home “changed [the] life” of his Peter Parker, the actor claimed to fans after the movie’s release, leaving him feeling “re-inspired” as a hero:
“It’s changed his life. He’s going back knowing that he has brothers. He’s going back in re-inspired to follow his destiny, his calling – the purpose of his life. By catching MJ, he got to make up for a terrible tragedy that he tried to avoid in his world.”
Sony Pictures has not yet made renewed attempts for a third Amazing Spider-Man movie official, but current MCU Spider-Man Tom Holland claimed Garfield had his “full support” if the company decided to pursue TASM 3: The Amazing Spider-Man.
“I think what was so wonderful was how Andrew was able to kind of make amends with the character and the studio, you know, to kind of win the general public back. That scene where he saved Zendaya, the fan reactions in the theater was so spectacular. So should Sony decide to do that, they would have my full support, and obviously, so would Andrew.”
Again, no official announcement regarding the actor’s return for a third movie has been made, but that hasn’t prevented fans from imagining another movie out loud.
Joining the Avengers is Andrew Garfield
The Avengers: The Kang Dynasty or Avengers: Secret Wars seem like the two films where Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man is most likely to make an appearance next.
The Marvel Multiverse narrative of all Marvel Multiverse stories is reportedly going to be tackled in Avengers 5 and 6, and there are rumors that numerous legacy figures may simultaneously appear on the screen.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige reportedly wants to replicate the iconic portals moment from Avengers: Endgame in Secret Wars, but with all other kinds of heroes from the company’s illustrious on-screen history.
This could imply that individuals like Peter Parker from Andrew Garfield would probably be included on that list.
Although it’s not proof, a clip from Spider-Man: No Way Home that was cut shows Garfield’s portrayal of the hero instructing Tobey Maguire and Tom Holland’s characters to “do this again.” This may have easily been the first hint that the trio of heroes would reunite in Avengers 5 or 6.
Before the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, recent rumors suggested Feige may have spoken to Garfield about making an appearance in Secret Wars. However, Marvel Studios has not yet made any official announcements.

Will Andrew Garfield return as Spider-Man 3?
There has been no hint that Garfield will reprise his role as Spider-Man in any upcoming films, including Avengers: Secret Wars and a third solo movie. The actor did, however, deem a potential crossover with Tom Hardy’s Venom to be a “cool idea,” so perhaps he will show up in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe again.
