Since Scott Lang can shrink, he goes by the name Ant-Man. But starting with Captain America: Civil War, the Marvel character has also started using his power to grow rather than shrink.
Several times, including when it helped the Avengers win a large airport battle and when Scott Lang used it to destroy Goliath-sized flying Chitauri ships in Avengers: Endgame.
However, there is one significant drawback to becoming so enormous with the Pym Particle, as the movies occasionally implied.
Paul Rudd’s Giant-Man Capabilities: Their Limits
The Marvel Cinematic Universe hero revealed the one issue with his Giant-Man abilities in a new book from Marvel titled Look Out For The Little Guy!, which is purportedly penned by Scott Lang himself.
Rudd responded to a query from a fan asking whether there’s a limit to how big he can get in the Q&A section of his hero’s book.
Lang started off by saying the question is one “[he] hate[s] to ask [Hank Pym]:”
“To be perfectly honest, that’s one of those Hank Pym questions that I hate to ask him, because he takes everything as a critique: ‘Oh, so it doesn’t get big enough for you now? Why do you need to be bigger?'”
The protagonist continued by stating that “self-enlargement” “takes a big toll on the human body:”
“But seriously, from what I’ve experienced, self-enlargement is something any user of the Ant-Man or Wasp suit needs to be really careful with. For a variety of reasons, it takes a big toll on the human body. Or at least mine. For one thing, going big puts a strain on my nervous system. So if my size hits a certain threshold, I start to see things, like, specifically, the ground coming toward me, Fast!”
Could Wasp ever make use of Giant-Man’s abilities?
It’s interesting to note that the remarks mentioned above seem to support the idea that Hope van Dyne Wasp’s suit can expand as well as contract. Because those abilities have so far solely been reserved for Scott Lang, audiences have never seen her attempt to use them.
Could fans expect to see Wasp grow in size in a later appearance? One cannot help but wonder if she would be able to fly in such a big state. Perhaps she can only fly when she is small, which may explain why she doesn’t fly with those blue Pym Particles.
Scott’s potential size hasn’t been established by the movies. Paul Rudd is an Avenger. The earlier films did depict how he becomes confused the longer he is enormous, which occurs the majority of the time.
Although it’s certainly an exaggeration, Scott Lang does claim at the beginning of his new book that “[he] can make [his] body as large as the Empire State Building”—a figure that is significantly greater than anything viewers have ever seen on screen.
Although Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania may not have received favorable reviews from audiences or critics, hopefully, Marvel Studios will use those characters again sooner rather than later.
While waiting, what if…? For anyone curious to see how Bill Foster’s version of Giant-Man would appear as a significant MCU character, Season 2 will undoubtedly expose him to the world.
