Fans received an update on the project’s progress as the upcoming Disney+ series Echo from the MCU is now experiencing unanticipated delays.
Over the past year, Echo has had one delay after another, raising questions about whether the series is of the same calibre and standard as the MCU.
The series was originally scheduled to debut as the second Disney+ show to be published during Phase 5 in Summer 2023, but it has now been delayed and won’t debut until at least late 2023, raising doubts about its viability when it does.
Only one of three brand-new shows, Alaqua Cox‘s solo Disney+ series, has had its premiere date delayed as Marvel (and Disney) considers reducing its annual output.
Marvel Informs Fans of the Status of the Echo Production
In an interview with Collider, Stephen Broussard, producer and vice president of production & development at Marvel Studios, provided a fresh update on the development of Echo, one of the planned Disney+ programmes from the MCU.
Broussard reported that everything is going smoothly while pointing out that this programme is “a very different tonal sort of thing” than anything in the MCU. He praised Alaqua Cox for her performance as the series’ lead actor, praising it as “very grounded” and “very spiritual,” promoting it on several levels:
“[Production on ‘Echo’] is going well. It’s very different. Like, talking about Werewolf by Night to this. It’s a very different tonal sort of thing. I don’t want to say too much because there’s not a whole lot out there in the world, but it feels very grounded, it feels very spiritual in ways that feel fresh for us. Alaqua as the lead is incredibly compelling. I’m sort of hard-pressed to think of something that it feels like outside in the broader realm of the MCU, let alone within what we’ve done here. So stay tuned on that really cool stuff.”
In his explanation of why it’s crucial for new movies and TV shows to embrace the tonal swings for the main characters, Broussard noted that Echo is “much more grounded” than earlier installments:
“It’s always about embracing whatever it is, right? Like embracing a Universal Hammer Horror film, kind of leaning into that and, I think leaning into what’s unique about any viewing property. What’s unique about this property is that it’s much more grounded, and it’s in rural Oklahoma, which is where it takes place. So it’s fun, and it’s been an amazing teamwork, and working with that team behind the scenes.”
Echo Regaining Her Focus?
Echo had more production issues than any of its co-stars, despite the fact that the series’ original filming was wrapped only a few months ago. However, these remarks from Stephen Broussard appear to be encouraging news for the MCU’s first deaf main character as she seeks to continue her tale following her conflict with Hawkeye and Kate Bishop.
As viewers eventually learn more about the young heroine’s background, returning to her Native American roots and giving her more depth following her initial introduction in Hawkeye Episode 3, the series has a number of fascinating plot aspects to look forward to.
The expectation is growing to see how her tale will fit into the undercurrent excitement from the MCU’s Phase 5 with fan favourites like Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk in line for significant supporting roles, which were already hinted at in the series’ initial teaser.
According to rumours, Echo will make its Disney+ debut in late 2023 or early 2024.
