Marvel Remembers Maria Hill After Her Death in the MCU

After Cobie Smulders unexpectedly passed away, Marvel Studios paid tribute to her role as Maria Hill in the MCU.

When Cobie Smulders’ longstanding MCU veteran Maria met her untimely and unceremonious death in the last scene of Secret Invasion‘s debut episode on Disney+, many were rather shocked.

Many MCU fans were eager to see what Hill would accomplish in her first live-action performance since the conclusion of the Infinity Saga, so the death of yet another original female supporting character was disappointing.

Marvel Honours Maria Hill from the MCU

Following the death of Maria Hill in the MCU’s Secret Invasion, Cobie Smulders’ Instagram account for Marvel Studios in the UK released two photos in memory of the character.

In that scenario, Gravik, played by Kingsley Ben-Adir, entered the Russian town assembly, detonated a bomb as part of a terror strike, then impersonated Nick Fury to shoot Maria Hill at point-blank range.

The image shows Hill smiling while reacquainting herself with a former coworker and friend while seated at a bar table with a drink in her hand and a chess board in front of her.

That colleague is none other than Samuel L. Jackson’s veteran MCU hero, Nick Fury, with whom she worked during the entire first episode of Secret Invasion.

They were reunited in that episode for the first time since Avengers: Endgame in 2019, though Hill’s passing didn’t occur much later.

The heartfelt message on the picture, “Here’s to you, Agent Hill,” remembered Smuders’ 11-year stint as the protagonist between 2012’s The Avengers and 2023’s Secret Invasion.

Did Maria Hill Get Justice from the Secret Invasion?

 Maria Hill

After seven appearances throughout the MCU, including a few significant scenes in Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, many fans had high hopes for Hill’s eagerly anticipated return in Secret Invasion.

However, many have expressed their dissatisfaction at the moment not ending on the highest of notes due to the fact that her inclusion in Secret Invasion was actually simply intended to forward the plot for Nick Fury in his battle against the Skrulls.

There are currently no plans for the deceased former SHIELD agent to reappear in any upcoming Multiverse Saga films or television episodes, making it seem as though Hill’s passing has become a permanent part of MCU history.

Smulders doesn’t appear to be through portraying the character in other media, but after seeing her leave the MCU so abruptly in this series, there will always be speculation about “what might have been.”

Disney+ is currently streaming Secret Invasion.
