Following his upcoming Marvel appearance, MCU actor Dave Bautista further elaborated on why he believes his departure from his role as Drax is so ideal.

The current edition of the Guardians team, which has been a mainstay in the MCU since 2014, will conclude in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, it has been revealed. And while it’s widely anticipated that at least one team member would pass away in this film, nobody has said as much about their upcoming leave from the franchise as Dave Bautista, with many speculating that Guardians 3 will be Drax’s last outing.

Bautista hasn’t concealed the fact that this movie almost definitely marks his last time portraying the character; in fact, he’s frequently hinted at it in interviews for the upcoming threequel as well as in several social media postings.

And now, with only a few months till Drax and company deliver the MCU’s second film of Phase 5, Bautista has spoken up about Guardians 3 serving as his final project with Marvel Studios.

Dave Bautista Discusses the Upcoming MCU Exit

Dave Bautista, Drax

Veteran MCU actor Dave Bautista spoke on his choice to leave the series following his appearance in this spring’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in an interview on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.

Having noted that he and his co-stars all agreed to a trilogy, Bautista once more said that this will be his final Marvel Cinematic Universe film. He also stated that this will be “he last version of [their] Guardians of the Galaxy” in the MCU:

“I think, yeah, it’s weird, I don’t know why it’s news. I feel like it’s…so this is my seventh film as Drax, and my third ‘Guardians’, and it’s like our trilogy, and that’s kind of what we all signed up for, to do a trilogy. This will be the last version of our Guardians of the Galaxy.”

In response to Fallon’s question on whether it was “hard to walk away” from the part, Bautista acknowledged that it was difficult but also that the moment was perfect. Making it clear that he doesn’t want to compromise his tale in any way, he wants to conclude his time in the MCU similarly to how he ended his career as a professional wrestler:

“It’s hard, but it’s time, and it’s the perfect exit. We all had those perfect kind of character arcs and such a storybook ending. I constantly relate it to the way I finished my wrestling career, I ended it on a storybook note and I would never go back and tarnish that, and it’s the same with this, with Drax. I just got to end it in a perfect way, and I would never sign up for another job as Drax just to get a paycheck, I wouldn’t tarnish that and I won’t do it.”

Bautista Prepares to End the MCU Story of Drax

The likelihood that Drax the Destroyer will be killed off at some point throughout the narrative is extremely strong because Dave Bautista has been open about the fact that Guardians 3 likely be the last time fans see him in the MCU. In this new interview, Bautista makes it quite apparent that he wants to conclude his tenure with the MCU on a successful note. The sense of finality that will accompany this film hasn’t been a secret over the previous couple of years.

Although exact story elements are still being kept under wraps, the film’s first teaser, which appeared in early December, hinted at the team’s impending fate as they continue to be shaken by the events of Avengers: Endgame.

The last moments of the teaser even seemed to allude to the conclusion of Drax’s narrative, with Bautista’s protagonist deep in conversation with Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord discussing eliminating anybody who stands in their path. Even if this comment alone does not ensure Drax’s survival, things aren’t looking good for the Guardians’ metaphor-averse member.

On May 5, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will hit cinemas.
