The upcoming animated streaming series, which picks up where the 1990s’ X-Men: The Animated Series left off, will reintroduce Marvel’s legendary band of mutants to a younger audience.
As the cherished group of super-powered misfits contemplates “What does [the] future hold for us” following the horrific events of the TAS finale, the project honoring the history of the classic X-Men series will bring back several iconic actors from the original program.
In anticipation of the series, the core cast of the program has been formally confirmed; nevertheless, details regarding who is portraying whom have mostly remained a secret.
Confirmed Cast for X-Men ’97 Reboot
Fans now have a list of the people who will play the main roles in the X-Men ’97 cast thanks to a recently filed legal document.
The 11 major performers who will make their first appearances in the upcoming animated series were named in the pre-registration copyright for Episode 1, revealing who would play whom.
1.) Ray Chase – Cyclops
Ray Chase is assuming the role of Scott Summers/Cyclops. As “the main characters” of the new series, Cyclops and Storm are expected to have significant roles in X-Men ’97.
Despite having roles in numerous programs, video games, and motion pictures, this is the first time experienced voice actor Chase has voiced the legendary X-Men character. He provided the Nick Fury voice in Marvel’s Midnight Suns last year.
2.) Jennifer Hale – Jean Grey
In the animated series homage, X-Men stalwart Jean Grey is back for more fun. As she mourns the passing of her mentor, Professor X, Jennifer Hale will be lending her voice to the copper-haired telepath this time.
Few voice actors are more well-known than Hale when it comes to voice acting stars. The veteran voice actor is best known for her work as Commander Shepard in the Mass Effect video game series, despite having previously played Jean Grey in several different roles. She most recently made an appearance in The Bad Batch as Sentaor Chuchi.
3.) Lenore Zann – Rogue
More than 20 years after her final appearance as the character in X-Men: The Animated Series, former Rogue actor Lenore Zann will return in X-Men ’97. When fans last saw Zann’s power-absorbing X-Men character, she was dating the charming Gambit and one of the team’s most important members.
Zann has continued acting since his last appearance as Rogue (in the fighting game Marvel vs. Capcom 2), appearing in projects like the animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series and My Little Pony.
4.) George Buza – Beast
George Buza, who plays the voice of Hank McCoy (also known as the charming blue giant genius, Beast), makes his triumphant comeback. The X-Men’s business is largely run by Beast, who provides the group with any equipment, tools, or vehicles they may require. He also contributes greatly on the battlefield thanks to his superhuman strength, which even the Hulk would be envious of.
Buza, who has appeared in several films since the series’ original run, including Bryan Singer’s original 2000 X-Men movie, reprises his Beast role from X-Men: The Animated Series.
5.) Holly Chou – Jubilee
Holly Chou, a newbie to the franchise, plays the pyrokinetic Jubilee (also known as Jubilation Lee). Jubilee played the role of the young gun who, in the X-Men squad, finally found family in the original series.
In addition to The Big Sick starring Kumail Nanjiani and the PlayStation 5 smash hit Horizon: Forbidden West, Holly Chou has worked on video games, motion pictures, and television.
6.) Christopher Britton – Mr. Sinister
Christopher Britton, who provided the voice for the nefarious Mr. Sinister in the first place, will voice him again in an animated film. According to series creator Beau DeMayo, Mr. Sinister will be the main enemy of X-Men ’97 because he wants “to destroy the X-Men once and for all.”
After later appearing in several projects like DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, the animated Iron Man series, and Netflix’s smash hit Locke & Key, Britton reprises his role as the X-Men bad guy.
7.) Alison Sealy-Smith – Storm
X-Men ’97’s Scott Summers (a.k.a. Cyclops) and Storm/Ororo Munroe, played by Alison Sealy Smith, serve as the film’s central characters. She will assist in leading the superhuman team and use her ability to control the weather to combat Mr. Sinister.
Except for the first season, Alison Sealy Smith initially played Strom in The Animated Series. The actress is also well-known for her roles in Degrassi: The Next Generation, Sailor Moon, and the animated Spider-Man series from the 1990s.
8.) Cal Dodd – Wolverine
Of course, no X-Men undertaking would be complete without the stern mutant with the adamantium coat, Wolverine. Since Logan rejoined the team following the conclusion of the Animated Series more than 20 years ago, iconic Wolverine voice actor Cal Dodd is reprising his role as the character.
Due to the actor’s social media post announcing his return and willingness to use the claws once more, Dodd was one of the first voice performers for X-Men ’97 to be officially confirmed. The actor has also appeared in Goosebumps, Atomic Betty, and Paw Patrol.
9.) A. J. LoCascio – Gambit
A. J. LoCascio, an American actor, plays Gambit in X-Men ’97, which is a fan favorite. The charismatic mutant who can kinetically charge things never leaves home without his dependable deck of cards. After The Animated Series, Gambit (also known as Remy LeBeau) kissed Rogue, giving her his set of energy-based abilities.
LoCascio plays Gambit for the first time in X-Men ’97, but fans will recognize him from his roles as Han Solo in last year’s LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga and Marty McFly in TellTale’s Back to the Future video game.
10.) Matthew Waterson – Magneto
Magneto will supposedly change his allegiance in X-Men ’97, becoming the team’s fictitious leader and using his metal-manipulating abilities for good following the passing of his old friend Charles Xavier. Magneto has spent years fighting the X-Men as a villain.
One of the brand-new voices joining the cast is Waterson, who has primarily worked on successful video games like The Last of Us Part II, Uncharted 4, and Hogwarts Legacy.
11.) Gui Agustini – Sunspot
Sunspot/Roberto De Costa will serve as one of the new characters expected to feature in X-Men ’97 despite never appearing in X-Men: The Animated Series. Roberto has mutant abilities that allow him to absorb solar energy and transform it into powerful blasts.
The Marvel children’s series Spidey and his Amazing Friends and the online component of the open-world crime video game Grand Theft Auto V are both works by Gui Agustini, who will create the new mutant.
The anticipated 2023 release date for X-Men ’97 has just been pushed back to 2024, according to rumors.
