Director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 Defends Gender Switching Decision Despite Criticism

In response to critics who questioned his choice to Gender Switching a significant Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 character, James Gunn responded.

Guardians 3 Marvel Studios MCU

The newest MCU installment from Marvel Studios has generated buzz. Indeed, Guardians 3 has received more positive reviews than any other Marvel film in more than a year.

Fans adored its emotionally stirring plot, richly developed characters, and extravagant action scenes. But trying to please everyone was difficult.

James Gunn’s Response to the Gender Switching Debate

Gender Switching

James Gunn, the director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, responded to critics of Cosmo the Spacedog’s gender in the film on Twitter. The character, which has always been a male dog in the pages of Marvel Comics, was changed for the big-budget hit.

Logan78106803 questioned Gunn on Twitter:

“Why did you make cosmo a female when he had always been known as a good boy”

Gunn defended his choice by citing the real-life dog Laika, one of the first animals to travel to space:

“Because Cosmo is based on Laika, the Russian dog, who was a female, so I gender-swapped her back.”

Additionally, NotgoingSane tweeted their thoughts on the matter:

“But it makes no sense why to change it. Keeping it wasn’t inaccurate as the comic is a male dog It serves no purpose to change it. The original comic was a male dog you are not ‘changing it back’ because it was never a female in the first place. Only inspired by.”

James Gunn mentioned several Guardians characters in his response, including Drax and Mantis, who he changed from their comic book counterparts:

“I’d rather honor the real dog who died in outer space. Cosmo would not exist without Laika. By the way, I changed Mantis, Drax, High Evo, and others from humans to aliens, which seems a bigger change. Why does it upset you so much?“

The same Twitter user reiterated their grievance:

“Because the whole point of an adaptation is to adapt. You adapt the source material as I stated. And I hate comics changing established characters as well (unless they state its a multiverse thing. )”

Gunn refused to accept it:

“It’s always a multiverse thing. That’s what the MCU is – a different version of Earth 616. And, again, you should look up the meaning of ‘adapt.’“

Gunn Maintains His Straight Aim

James Gunn has a history of criticising individuals on Twitter. Gunn is frequently present to clarify things, whether it’s because someone is spreading untruths or being rude.

It would be interesting to see how he develops in this area as he becomes more comfortable in his role as CEO of DC Studios. He has already dispelled a number of myths about Superman: Legacy‘s pre-production.

It’s encouraging to see a creator, especially one who occupies such a prominent position, be so eager to answer to people on Twitter. He frequently responds to those who are more respectful in a friendlier manner.

And as for Cosmo, it’s commendable that Gunn wants to honour Laika, the real-life dog, in his film even though the character may occasionally be portrayed as male. Does it really matter what gender she is, either in the context of the movie or in the big picture?

Cosmo’s character ended up being well-liked by the audience, and in Guardians 3 she even had a noteworthy scene to display her potent telekinetic talents. As shown in the mid-credits scene of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, she also secures a position on the new Guardians lineup.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 by Marvel Studios is currently showing in theatres all over the world.
