Simu Liu, who plays Shang-Chi, hinted at what to anticipate from the follow-up to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings from 2021.
While not being listed on the MCU‘s official list of forthcoming Multiverse Saga films, Destin Daniel Cretton, who also directed the original Shang-Chi movie, has been confirmed to helm the sequel.
The fifth Avengers movie, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, which opens in theatres on May 2, 2025, will also be directed by him.
None of the characters from Shang-Chi have surfaced since the 2021 film. The movie’s use of well-known figures like Wong and the Abomination, however, has been further discussed in works like She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.
The celebrity himself has now revealed some brand-new details about what fans may expect from the highly anticipated sequel.
In the sequel to Shang-Chi, Liu teases “Fantastic Action” and more
Simu Liu gave a sneak preview of the upcoming Shang-Chi and Legend of the Ten Rings sequel in an interview with Collider.
The actor talked about the pressure reduction he is feeling now that he is not“essentially crafting this character, every single day” as he was with the first one while working with a huge production budget. He stated that “generally, you’re under the most pressure when something is unproven:”
“Generally, you’re under the most pressure when something is unproven. There’s really high stakes. I remember shooting the first movie and feeling like, ‘Okay, we’re essentially crafting this character, every single day.’ The stakes could not be higher because it was a 100 bajillion dollar movie budget. I feel like those are the circumstances under which the pressure would be the highest.”
The good feelings Liu experiences are “returning to [a] world that we’ve spent so much time ideating on and thinking about:”
“Going into a sequel feels exciting. It doesn’t necessarily feel like there’s a pressure to perform or a pressure to exceed. It feels like we’ve established a world and there’s just something really nostalgic and exciting about returning to that world that we’ve spent so much time ideating on and thinking about.”
The sequel would “revisit some things, but also show the viewer new things,” according to Liu. He emphasized explicitly that viewers could count on “the amazing action that we were celebrated for in the first movie” as well as brand-new plot points for the eponymous character, in Shang-Chi 2.
“And then, we’re getting to revisit some things, but also show the viewer new things. We’ll deliver all of the amazing action that we were celebrated for on the first movie, but then also hopefully explore new sides of Shaun’s character and the characters around him.”
“That is, of course, if we can still afford Michelle Yeoh:”, he teased as he concluded.
“That is, of course, if we can still afford Michelle Yeoh. She’s on top of the world and just the queen of everything.”
What will the plot of Shang-Chi 2 be?
Fans can make assumptions about these “new sides of Shaun’s character and the characters around him” based on these indications from Simu Liu.
The 10 Rings “will return” in a post-credits sequence, according to the closing of the first movie, which foreshadowed their re-formation by Xu Xialing (Meng’er Zhang). Maybe the sequel will go deeper into this new approach for the character.
Additionally, since Shang-Chi and Katy (Awkwafina) were pulled into discussions with several important Avengers and allies, the new sides that fans may anticipate may entail Shang-Chi adjusting to his new squad and new demands.
Although a release date for Shang-Chi 2 is unknown, Disney+ is presently streaming the film’s predecessor, Shang-Chi, and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
Will Shang-Chi have a follow-up?
It has also been reported that writer and director Destin Daniel Cretton will return to direct the follow-up. As of right now, “Shang-Chi 2” has no set release date.
Will Shang-Chi 2 feature Katy?
Since Simu Liu played Shang-Chi in the previous movie and Awkwafina played Katy, it goes without saying that they will both return in Shang-Chi 2. Wong introduced them to the world of superheroes.
Shang-Chi 2’s director is unknown.
Simu Liu Verifies the Destin Daniel Cretton Is Coming Back To Direct…
Directing a massive ‘Avengers’ feature for 2026 on top of Cretton’s already-scheduled directing duties for the unnamed “Shang-Chi 2” sequel, Marvel Studios’ Disney+ series “Wonder Man,” and production duties would be unfeasible.
