The MCU Writer Teases the High Death Toll in Avengers 5

With Earth’s Mightiest Heroes poised to reunite in Avengers(5) :The Kang Dynasty, lead writer Jeff Loveness hinted that a fatality might be in store for the MCU‘s major team-up film.

Avengers 5 Deaths MCU

After watching Tony Stark and Natasha Romanoff meet their end in Avengers: Endgame, additional key deaths appear to be an absolute certainty for Avengers 5. Many anticipate Kang the Conqueror to go on a murdering spree as he progresses towards being the next Avengers-level enemy.

Only three MCU characters have been specifically linked to parts in Avengers 5 as of yet, but as Phases 5 and Phase 6. progress, that number is expected to rise.

Yet with fear that Kang hasn’t exerted himself to his full capacity yet, Avengers 5’s lead writer isn’t bothered in the slightest.

In Avengers 5, there will be a death.

Avengers 5

The lead writer of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, Jeff Loveness, discussed the possibility of major characters dying in the upcoming Avengers film in an interview with ComicBook.com.

He mentioned the MCU’s most “bloodthirsty fans,” ready for them to suffer a good amount of heat when Avengers 5 arrives:

“I think for these bloodthirsty fans, there’s a little movie called ‘Avengers: Kang Dynasty,’ I think he’ll bring the heat.”

Loveness compared putting together a tale with “so many characters in the ensemble” to solving a large jigsaw.

“I mean, certainly in these Marvel rooms and all that, you certainly game out all these stories and you pitch them out, you write them out, and you’re trying to land the best puzzle piece because there’s so many characters in the ensemble.”

Loveness also explored the notion with The Hollywood Reporter when asked if there were some “seismic deaths” on the table in Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, which Loveness also wrote.

Although Quantumania was primarily an Ant-Man narrative, he said that the crew didn’t want to “[copy] the Thanos approach,” in which he quickly decimates a large number of MCU heroes:

“They were. We certainly gamed out a ton of scenarios, but it just felt a little obvious. It’s up for debate, but it just felt like we’d be copying the Thanos approach where he comes in pretty heavy and wipes the floor with everybody. I certainly see the critiques and all that, but this is a multi-step story that we’re telling. It’s also an Ant-Man movie.”

In response to rumours that Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man might pass away in the Ant-Man threequel, he clarified that, similar to The Wizard of Oz and Jurassic Park, audiences might not want to return for additional films if the primary character dies:

“I think people say they want that, but do you really want to see Paul Rudd get murdered in his third movie? It was all debated, all discussed and all gamed out, but in ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ you don’t want to see Dorothy die and never go home. It’s supposed to be one of these classic adventure movies. If everyone gets eaten in ‘Jurassic Park,’ I don’t know if you’ll want to see the next ‘Jurassic Park.'”

However, Loveness also made it clear that viewers shouldn’t worry too much about Kang’s death toll, which will soon rise:

“But I wouldn’t worry too much about Kang’s kill count. He’s going to rack up some kills as he goes along.”

In Avengers 5 who will perish?

There is obviously no way to predict who will die in this scenario with more than two years until Avengers 5 hits theatres.

According to early plot rumours, Kang is on a mission to destroy the whole Multiverse while the first wave of Avengers pursues him. In the process, he even teams up with He Who Remains from Loki.

Since the release of Ant-Man 3, there have already been whispers that someone from Team Ant-Man may die in Avengers 5. This is especially likely given that they were the first to engage with Kang on the big screen.

In addition, Jonathan Majors made it seem as though he would like to compete against Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, which has many people hoping that the God of Thunder will finally put an end to his MCU saga after more than a decade of films.

Given Kang’s enormous threat to all of existence, the trend of huge deaths appearing in all four of the Avengers films seems certain to continue.

Only time will tell who ends up in the firing line, though, as the plot’s specifics are still being worked out and there are still almost two full Phases of stories to be told before the fifth team-up saga debuts.

The current release date for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is May 2, 2025.
